I don't think thats strictly true, the advantages of using subdomains are obvious - for one you can get your keyword in your domain name - google treats subdomains just like real domains (iirc), if you have a large retail site you can categorize your page content without pushing it 4+ directories deep.
e.g.
music-players.blah.com/ipod/ipod-touch
is better than
blah.com/music-players/ipod/ipod-touch
......
@web_promotion: PR is probably still the most important factor google uses (along with 150+ different factors), unfortunately they've broken it's functionality with the introduction of nofollow, more and more people will start conserving "link juice" and will nofollow their external links regardless of whether it's appropriate, the more this happens, the less effective PR will be and accuracy of SERPs will suffer as a result.
