The future in SEO?

Personalisation and Social Media will make it increasingly difficult and more competitive to perform. As such, SEO will become more and more important to the online success of businesses, albeit in a different form than 'traditional' SEO.

The industry moves so quickly that it is very difficult to predict the future several years ahead though. The main advice is to stay on top of things and don't stand still!

My concern is that with everyone seemingly wanting to fatten their wallets with paid inclusion and PPC, that the search engines will drop the regular spidering and go with advertising. This would only make it impossible for the little guy to get good positioning.

A similar model to the one you describe is being employed by Baidu in China. I wouldn't be concerned, such a model would not work in our western culture and I am pretty confident the big search engines will never go down that route.

The first one who does will be the one which loses tons of users, which ultimately drops the value of their advertisement A loose-loose situation for them
