Default Using a proxy server to see the US-SERPs?

Hi guys,

I have a problem. I used to think that I could simply type in google.com and switch to English language and then see the same rankings somebody from the US would see (yeah, I know .com doesnt mean USA lol).

However, today I noticed I had 3 UK sites at #4-6 that a friend of mine who lives in the US couldnt even see in his top 20.

I think it would make sense for Google to favor UK sites for somebody whos doing a search in English in Germany for e-commerce stuff. They'll have to pay less shipping costs and not wait as long as if they ordered from the US (or OZ/NZ/.. for that matter). Thus a better search experience. Has anyone noticed this, before?

Anyway, Im wondering how to deal with this problem. Can I use a proxy server from the US to see the US Serps? That has been suggested to me, but I dont really know anything about proxy servers never having used one...Is this even legal? I assume Id go to a certain site then 'log in' and every website Ill go to will believe Im from the location that the proxy server is based in, right? Thus if I was using a US proxy server, Id get the US results, because google would have no way to know that Im in Germany not in the US?

Maybe I could just add a query string(exp?) to google.com to see the US SERPs?

thanks guys!

Yes, I've never heard anything about it being illegal, and you have perfectly valid reasons to do it.

Hi guys, I just wanted to add my own 2 cents here - IMO organic placement has become more and more an instant by instant game and you really never know where the hell you are located on the SERPs.

I know for a fact that positioning is very volatile within the same country: many times I have been on the phone with Clients and they are seeing a different set of results. To make mateers worse your browser will have an impact on what you are seeing as well. I browse with Flock and can see different results with Internet Explorer, results that may change depending also on the version of the same browser (Mac or windows) ... pin pointing rankings is very difficult not to say impossible (never say never).

I think your best bet is to track your performance with analytics or more simply with some good old statistics for starters - there you will actually see where you're getting the traffic from: chasing SERP eresults is pie in the sky ...

This is something that we (WebCertain) offer as a service - proxy servers in countries so that you can examine rankings from that location. We have one client that we provide servers in 7 countries for, so they can examine their rankings from all around the world.

We also do hosting in other countries, and anything else server-wide to back up SEO efforts.

In terms of how it works;

in your browser (either IE, firefox, whatever), there's an option for proxy servers. You enter the details and then the traffic goes via that server. Most ranking programs and other analysis tools have options to let you use proxy servers.

Default geo placements

well Server location matter alot in your SERPs . i got a site and hosted in a UK server in the end i saw that it showed more top results in Google UK and yahoo uk rather then Google us
but now i have shifted that site to a US server and thanks God now my SERPs are much better in Google.com and yahoo.com
please recommend me that now how can i see my ranking in different locations ? which proxy should i use ?
