If you want to rank in google.ca or google.com.au as opposed to google.com,
how important are a canadian/australian phone number on the website?

Are they mostly important for local (as in city) listings or are they important for a canada or australia vs. a US listing?

I have never heard of Google using geographic numbers to match to the name of a location.

The best way to rank for a country would be to add the address and the contact details at the footer. Say if I wanted to do a certain address:

11 Downing Street, London, England (UK) SW1A 2AA

or

11 Downing Street, London, England, United Kingdom, SW1A 2AA

In England, people are more likely to search for terms like "web design UK" as to "web design England". I don't think this would be the case for Canada, as "web design ca" doesn't really roll of your tongue. Do some keyword research on it

On the other hand, if you have multiple locations such as shops, I would do a store finder on your site and list information for that store on that page and optimise it around that content on the page. I would do it by adding a picture of the shop frontage with the address. I would then add information as to what they sell and what brands they supply. You could write directions, include a map and a brief description of what's inside the store.

Still include a contact page. People will find it easier to contact your business as to doing a store finder.

However, it is worth submitting your site to Google Business Centre. You submit data about your business and Google integrates this with Google Maps , Google Local and maybe Google Earth. With universal search I have seen business contact details listed beneath the description or sometimes a link to Google Maps to allow the person get directions to your business. You can add multiple offices/locations if you wish.

Its not so much important to give any phone no in the website to get ranking in google.ca or google.com.au its depened upon on your keywords.

I don't think that Google will index your site by your personal number from where you are operating, if you want a good back links submit your site in .ca and .aus related directories. To be sure you will get local traffic to your web site, thanks for sharing...
